Doherty Center co-hosts Global Workshop in Spain

Gary Palin, executive director of the Doherty Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership, welcomed 76 social entrepreneurship scholars, students and practitioners to the 2009 SEEC Europe workshop held in Segovia, Spain, on July 9-11.

Seventy-six social entrepreneurship scholars attended the event.
Elon University Doherty Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership and IE University co-hosted the workshop orchestrated by the Social Entrepreneurship and Education Consortium (SEEC).  Attendees from five continents participated in the three-day workshop discussing issues ranging from ‘How to promote social entrepreneurship at university campuses,’ ‘Trends in research on social entrepreneurship,’ ‘Identifying opportunities and needs: A student’s perspective,’ ‘Meeting and interacting with social entrepreneurs: From theory to practice’ and ‘Teaching social entrepreneurship: Sharing experiences.’

“The enthusiasm, energy and passion of the participants was contagious and inspiring,” Palin said. “The SEEC workshops are important gatherings assisting the field of social entrepreneurship to move forward within universities across the globe.”

SEEC is for individuals and organizations leading university social entrepreneurship activities, competitions, curriculum and academic research. The objective of the consortium is to share best practices, exchange ideas, form collaborations and to develop better integrated strategies. The SEEC community allows all individuals interested in university social entrepreneurship activities to establish new discussions, continue previous interactions and learn more about other programs and initiatives.

Robert Katz, Knowledge & Communications Associate, of the Acumen Fund gave the keynote address.  The Acumen Fund is a non-profit global venture fund that uses entrepreneurial approaches to solve the problems of global poverty. Their investments focus on delivering affordable, critical goods and services – like health, water, housing and energy – through innovative, market-oriented approaches.
