Associate professor Jon Metzger served as a cultural envoy for the United States Embassy in Ankara, Turkey, this past May.
The U.S. State Department’s Office of Educational and Cultural programs selected Metzger to work with the music faculty at the Conservatory at Haceteppe State University in developing a new jazz studies program. Together, they prepared entrance exams, two-year preparatory and four-year curricula, complete course descriptions, and discussed space and equipment requirements.
During his residency, Metzger also gave improvisation and jazz pedagogy workshops for faculty and students, jazz performance master classes, and numerous performances at the Conservatory in Izmir and in Ankara, including a recital for the U.S. Charge d’Affairs.
