Elon’s Zipcar fleet is expanding to three vehicles this fall with the addition of a Honda Civic to provide more availability to more than 350 people who take part in the program.
The Zipcar program started in October of 2007 with two Toyota Priuses. “The third vehicle is being added to meet the demand of Elon’s growing program,” said Elaine Durr, Elon’s sustainability coordinator.
Elon University students, faculty and staff can join the Zipcar program for $35 per year and have around-the-clock access to Zipcars parked in front of the Moseley Center. Members reserve the vehicle online, and hourly rates include gas, insurance, parking and 180 miles per day.
New members receive $35 in free driving to use your first month. To join, click on the link to the right under the E-Cast section.
Members must be 18 or older to join. Members age 18-20 can use the Zipcars parked on the Elon campus. Members age 21 and over also have access to thousands of Zipcars in other locations.
“The Zipcar program is great for students who do not have cars on campus,” Durr said. “It provides them with easy access to a vehicle.”
University departments can get a departmental membership with unlimited members for $100 per year. Many of Elon’s departmental accounts are used for short trips such as picking up a speaker at the airport or attending meetings in a nearby city.
Those with a current membership can refer friends and earn free driving credit. For every friend approved, registered members will receive $50 in driving credit. Members can split it, give it away, or keep it for themselves.
Referrals must be made before new join. To get started visit www.zipcar.com/members/refer.
