Family Weekend 2009 schedule of events

Family Weekend 2009 runs Sept. 25-27 with a series of events that include a golf tournament, concerts and a football game between the 13th-ranked Elon Phoenix and the Georgia Southern Eagles.

The Family Weekend Picnic at Lake Mary Nell and coffee with President Leo M. Lambert are also highlights of the weekend. For more information, click on the Family Weekend link to the right of this page.

Friday, September 25, 2009

1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Space provided for Jummah Prayer, Room 216, Moseley Center
The Religious and Spiritual Life Office is happy to provide space and arrange leadership for Jummah prayer if requested. Contact Rene Summers at summerre@elon.edu to request space.

1:30 p.m.
Golf Tournament, The Indian Valley Golf Course
Hosted by the Phoenix Club, the tournament will be a shotgun start. Entry fee ($50 per person) includes greens fee, cart, beverages and awards. Participants should plan to spend most of the afternoon on the course.

3 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
“Focus on Elon,” Campus Shop, Moseley Center
Are you showing your Elon spirit? Check out the Campus Shop for a great selection of Phoenix apparel and gifts.

3 p.m. – 7 p.m.
Check In and On-Site Registration, Koury Athletic Center Concourse
Pick up a schedule for the weekend, tickets for events, and other information.

3 p.m. – 8 p.m.
Koury Center Open Recreation, Campus Recreation, Koury Athletic Center
You will find a pass to visit Koury Athletic Center in your Family Weekend packet. The Koury Center houses Beck Pool, the Stewart Fitness Center, which includes a cardio-fitness room, free weight room, five racquetball courts and an aerobics studio. Children under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and may not use the cardio-fitness room.

4 – 6 p.m.
Hospitality Center, Hearth Lounge, Moseley Center
The Elon Parents Council invites all families to stop by for refreshments and a moment of rest between activities.

6 p.m.
Shabbat Service/Kiddush, McKinnon Hall, Moseley Center
The Elon Hillel group welcomes all Jewish students and their families to a brief Shabbat service and Kiddush.

7 p.m.
Women’s Soccer v. Wofford, Rudd Field

7 p.m. and 8:15 p.m.
Collage Concert, Yeager Recital Hall, Center for the Arts
The Department of Performing Arts will present an exciting collage of entertainment presented by our talented students! Tickets are limited.

8:30 p.m.
The Music Department Faculty Concert, Whitley Auditorium
Faculty members from the Elon University Music Department return to the stage for Family Weekend. This program has been a big hit since it began in 1999 – come and enjoy what is sure to be a great show.

“Meet and Greet” Professors
Enjoy informal conversations with your student’s professors. Faculty members’ locations are printed on your student’s guide that is available in the Registration area.

9:45 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.
For Grandparents: Seminar I, Center for the Arts
Choose from several interesting seminars, including one led by associate professor of economics Gregory Lilly about the American housing market and its effect on the global economy.

10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

Parents Council members will be on hand to answer questions and refreshments will be served.

10:45 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
For Grandparents: Seminar II, Center for the Arts
Choose from several interesting seminars, including one led by Gary Palin, executive director of the Doherty Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership, titled “Entrepreneurial Thinking as a Competitive Advantage for Today’s Students.”

Greek Life, Moseley Center
If your son or daughter is considering joining a fraternity or sorority, the Office of Greek Life staff will explain the recruitment process and answer any questions you may have.

11 a.m. – noon
Center for Leadership Open House, Moseley 224
Families and students can visit with staff and current students in the Isabella Cannon Leadership Program, find out how to get involved and learn more about the Emerging Leaders program.

11 a.m. – noon
Open House for Honors Fellows and Families, Honors Pavilion
Families of Honors Fellows are invited to visit with one another and the directors of the Honors Program.

Open House in the Isabella Cannon Centre for International Studies, Carlton Building
Families and students can visit wtih staff in the Isabella Cannon Centre for International Studies to talk about Elon study abroad opportunities or international student opportunities at Elon.

Mini Classes
Recipients of the Daniels-Danieley Excellence in Teaching Award and other distinguished faculty and staff will teach these classes. Session topics will be located in the registration packet.

A tailgate lunch of chicken, barbecue and all the fixin’s. Student meal cards are not honored at this event; be sure to purchase a ticket for your student when you purchase yours.

1:30 p.m. – 3 p.m.
For Grandparents: Elon University Campus Tour, begin at Moseley Center
Not a football fan? Join local historian and Elon staff member Larry Vellani on a special campus tour just for grandparents. Learn about the university’s rich history and enjoy the beauty of the campus, which is a designated botanical garden and a member of the American Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboreta. Transportation by golf cart is included and will depart from Moseley Center. Space is limited and may be reserved through the registration process.

5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
Catholic Mass, McCrary Theatre
Bishop of Raleigh Michael Burbidge and Fr. Gerry Waterman will celebrate Mass with students and their families. Immediately following Mass, Bishop Burbidge will bless the new Newman Center with a reception to follow.

6 p.m. and 7:15 p.m.

Elon Traditional Ring Ceremony, Whitley Auditorium
Dr. Earl Danieley, President Emeritus and Adjunct Professor, will conduct a short ceremony and distribute traditional rings to Elon students who ordered them in the spring or summer.

Enjoy a continental breakfast with Leo and Laurie Lambert at Maynard House prior to the worship service. Transportation will be provided from Boney Fountain in the Moseley Center parking lot. (The last bus will leave the Moseley Center at 9:40 a.m.)

University Worship Service, Elon Community Church
Join us as the Elon University Gospel Choir participates in the 10:30 a.m. service.

Join Jewish students, families, faculty and staff for bagels and conversation.

Women’s Soccer v. Furman, Rudd Field

Yom Kippur

The Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur begins at sundown on Sunday, Sept. 27. and concludes at sundown on Monday, Sept. 28. If you choose to spend the holiday at Elon, Elon Hillel has made arrangements for Elon students and their families to attend religious services at Temple Emanuel (Reform) or Beth David Synagogue (Conservative) in Greensboro. We will provide van transportation. Families are also welcome to Elon Hillel’s breakfast meal on Monday, Sept. 28.
