Elon Law hosts second annual Family and Friends Day

On September 26, the faculty and administration of Elon University School of Law welcomed more than 300 students, friends and family members for the law school's second annual Family and Friends Day, introducing Elon Law families to the law school experience.

The event featured panel discussions with students, alumni, parents, and other relatives, mock classes, and a lively lecture on the history of Elon by Dr. Earl Danieley, President Emeritus of Elon University.

Guests were greeted at a morning reception by George R. Johnson, Jr., Dean of Elon University School of Law, and by Woody Edney, L’10, President of Elon Law’s Student Bar Association, who thanked all parents, relatives, and friends for supporting Elon Law students during their three years of study. “We continue the tradition of Family and Friends Day to give you a taste of what law school is really like, and also to remind you of how important you are to your favorite Elon Law student,” Edney said.

Family and friends then participated in mock law classes, choosing between a tort law class offered by Elon Law professor Helen Grant, and a criminal law class, taught by Elon Law professor Steve Friedland. In the classes, parents and friends were given reading assignments, called upon to answer questions, and invited to work in groups to discuss legal issues.

First-year law student Heather Deal welcomed her family to the event. “It was important for them to come today so they can see what’s going on at Elon, and what I’m involved in,” Deal said.

Her father, Clyde Deal, agreed. “We wanted to get first-hand knowledge of Elon and experience where Heather is going to spend the next three years of her life,” he said. “Elon has a very impressive history and great resources for Heather. We were glad to be able to come.”

Eugenia Leggett, Associate Dean for Development at Elon Law, said she was proud to see the law school continuing the tradition of Family and Friends Day. “We at Elon Law pride ourselves in being part of a family,” Leggett said. “To that end, we enjoy having law students bring their families to meet the Elon family and see what the law school is all about.”

Family and friends also enjoyed an evening performance on September 25 of “A Thousand Kites,” a collection of stories from prisoners, their family members, corrections officers and community members. The reading was presented by members of the Elon Law Sports and Entertainment Society.
