Seasonal flu shots available on campus Oct. 12-14

Elon has received 1,400 doses of seasonal flu vaccine (not the H1N1 vaccine) which will be administered free to students, faculty, staff and retirees on Monday - Wednesday, Oct. 12-14, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Moseley Center Fireside Lounge. Read this note for details...

The Ellington Health Center received approximately 1,400 doses of the vaccine this year, based on administration rates in 2008. We do not expect to receive any more doses. We suggest you come as early as possible since we anticipate high demand for the vaccine this year. You will need to present your Phoenix Card at time of service to receive the free vaccine. Please also note we expect lines may be long and there may be a wait time, but we will move as quickly and safely as possible.

Spouses, qualified domestic partners, retirees’ spouses and dependent children over the age of 12 years old are eligible to receive the vaccines for a $20 fee (cash or check, payable at time of service). We must limit the administration to those over 12 years old because our dosages are pre-measured for an adolescent/adult population. Anyone under 18 years old must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Since doses of the seasonal flu vaccine are limited and demand may exceed supply, we will also post a listing of area fee-for-service resources on the Health Services and Elon University Web sites by Monday, Oct. 12. You may also contact your local health provider as many area medical offices may administer flu vaccines to established patients. A partial list of off-campus sources of the seasonal vaccine is below.

Elon was originally scheduled to administer the seasonal flu vaccine later in the month, but on the advice of the Alamance County Health Department, the Ellington Center staff has made arrangements to administer the seasonal flu vaccine earlier. We had hoped to administer H1N1 (aka Swine flu) vaccine at the same time, but we have not received any doses yet. We do not have any definitive word yet on when we will be able to administer H1N1 vaccine, but we expect it will be in November at the earliest (and we do not want to wait to administer the seasonal vaccines). We will notify the community as soon as we receive the H1N1 vaccine and can make arrangements for administration.

I would like to thank the entire University community for your diligence in taking precautions regarding the spread of the flu this year. The Ellington Center staff has diagnosed several cases of flu-like symptoms and confirmed approximately 11 cases of the flu, but our total cases of flu-like symptoms and confirmed cases of the flu has been less than 5% of the population over a span of eight weeks. Keep up the good work! We want to reduce the outbreak of seasonal flu as well! More information about seasonal and H1N1 flu, prevention tips and flu vaccines can be accessed at the Centers for Disease Control web site at http://www.cdc.gov/flu/ or at www.elon.edu/flu.

If you have questions or need additional information, please contact the R.N. Ellington Health and Counseling Center at ext. 7230 or e-mail Kitty Parrish, Director of Health Services at kparrish@elon.edu.

Here’s to a Healthier Campus!
