Elon Law faculty and students support undergraduate legal education

Elon Law faculty and students volunteered their time Oct. 16-18, 2009, to serve as judges for the undergraduate Carolina Classic Mock Trial Invitational Tournament hosted by Elon Undergraduate Mock Trial as part of the American Mock Trial Association's Fall Invitational Tournament schedule.

This is the third year that Elon has hosted the Carolina Classic Mock Trial Tournament, with more than 250 undergraduate students from 16 universities to Elon’s main campus for the weekend. Students competed in four rounds of competition. The judging pool consisted of Elon Law Faculty and students along with local legal practitioners predominantly from the Piedmont Triad and Research Triangle areas.

“This event would simply not be possible without the support of so many local attorneys’,” said William Warihay, the tournament director and third-year Elon law student. “It is truly amazing to see so many people come together to support to the legal education of undergraduate students. The Elon tournament is just one of more than 50 tournaments that will occur across the country this year.”

Eric Ashley Hairston, director of the Pre-Law Program and the Center for Law and Humanities, said he is pleased with the growth and success of the undergraduate Mock Trial program.

“The competition was rigorous, and we had a number of new universities join our growing group of regular attendees,” he said. “Elon’s Mock Trial reputation has grown, and we have interest in our tournament from coast to coast now.

“I think the tournament gave us a great early look at our new recruits, and frankly, the new talent is impressive. And neither programs of undergraduate legal studies, nor mock trial teams, can be successful without the interest and support of the local bar associations and legal education community, and we are fortunate to have strong support from the area legal community as a whole.”
