Kernodle Center hosts Fall Campus-Community Networking lunch

Thirty-five faculty and community agencies participated Nov. 5 in The Kernodle Center for Service Learning’s first Fall Campus-Community Networking lunch on campus.

For five years, the spring networking lunch has offered opportunities to explore and expand partnerships centered around service experiences and the announcement of Community Partner Initiative grants. The fall luncheon was added due to a growth in new partnerships and the expansion of the Center’s effort to support and develop campus-community relationships.

The event allowed time for guests to meet others through the assistance of Tammy Cobb, assistant director for community partnerships, and three student leaders from the Academic Service Learning team.

Jeff Stein, associate dean of students and assistant professor of English, announced the availability of the fall Community Partner Initiative Grants. Requests for proposals were made available for faculty interested in the application process that ends Nov. 19.

Selected awards will support collaborative partnerships between the university and local community nonprofits. Preferred projects are sustainable in nature and grounded within Academic Service Learning courses. Five to eight projects will be chosen and granted funds between $500 and $1,000.

Faculty from various departments and programs, including Human Services Studies, English, Communications, Education, Political Science, Project Pericles and Spanish attended with representatives from 14 local agencies.

For more information or CPI grant applications, contact Stein at 278-7250 or jstein@elon.edu, or any of the following faculty and staff for more information, ideas about community partners, or support in developing a request for proposal.
