Martha Peters, professor of legal education at Elon Law, delivered a series of presentations in October on self-assessment techniques, professionalism, and career development to law students at Stetson University College of Law and to career services counselors and law students at the University of Florida Law School.
In a two-hour presentation titled, “What I can learn about Me from the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator,” given at Stetson University College of Law on October 22, Peters focused on the intersection of self-awareness and engaged leadership. The address was presented to third year law students as part of Stetson’s Legal Community in Action Day. Peters encouraged students to learn more about themselves in order to determine how best they could contribute to professional and civic communities throughout their legal careers.
At the University of Florida’s Levin College of Law, Peters provided a two-part training program for law students and for the school’s Career Planning Office. During the training, Peters worked with participants on collaboration skills in the workplace and on helping law students and alumni deal with stress in the context of the difficult job market. Peters also provided a program for law students titled, “Using Assessment Tools for Career Development,” which explored parts of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator.
“Sharing the techniques of personal discovery and leadership development that we offer at Elon University School of Law with other law schools and law students across the country has been a gratifying experience,” Peters said. “My visits with the law schools at Stetson and the University of Florida also helped me to see the values we share in legal education, working to provide students with an understanding of their service responsibilities as members of the legal profession.”
Peters teaches primarily within the academic skills program at Elon Law, offering coaching opportunities to individual students to support the development of effective study techniques, including approaches to reading cases, writing briefs, and organizing materials, as well as techniques for time management and test taking.
