From the Triad Business Journal (12/23/09): North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue on Wednesday released a policy manual and tutorial that will guide state agency use of social media including Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.
“Social networking is not the next-big-thing,” Perdue was quoted in a statement released by her office. “It’s here now and state government must stay current if we are to be fully transparent and accountable to the public.”
The policies have two major purposes: To issue instructions on social media and to make sure that public records and archiving laws are being preserved in the process.
Perdue placed a link to the policy manual on her own Facebook page.
Among other things, the policy directs state agencies and department to review how social media fits into their communication strategies. Beyond that, the guidelines discuss employee boundaries for on-the-job social media use, security and document preservation.
