Two Elon students, juniors Christina Cooper and Qiao-Yi Joy Zhou, have been awarded Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships to help fund their Spring 2010 semester study abroad experiences.
Cooper, of Winston-Salem, N.C., received a $4,000 scholarship to help fund studies at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. The strategic communications major and psychology minor will study at the university’s Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information.
Zhou, of Hong Kong, received a $4,000 scholarship to help fund her semester at the Danish Institute for Study Abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark. The strategic communications major and international studies minor will take courses in European media and advertising, international law, and Danish literature while in Denmark, and she will live with a Danish host family. Zhou also received a scholarship from DIS to help fund her experience.
The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study abroad and the countries and regions where they study. The program is funded by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and is administered by the Institute of International Education.
Students have also received scholarships from Elon study abroad affiliate organizations. Junior Tiana Tucker from Washington, D.C., received the Mary Dau Scholarship from the Danish Institute for Study Abroad. Tucker is majoring in communications science and has a minor in art. She will take courses in advertising, political rhetoric, digital design, creative industries, and digital consumers while in Denmark for Spring 2010 semester.
Junior Kelli Accardi from Lugoff, S.C., also received a scholarship from DIS for Spring 2010. Accardi is majoring in strategic communications and has a minor in Business Administration. She will take courses in advertising, news media, digital consumers, and Danish literature while in Copenhagen.
Junior Katelyn Lazor from Kent, Ohio, received the Sharif Rahman Scholarship from the Foundation for International Education. Lazor is majoring in business administration with a concentration in entrepreneurship and has a minor in art. She will study at the FIE program in Dublin, Ireland, for the spring semester. In addition to her courses in business and Irish culture and history, Lazor will complete an internship in Dublin.
In addition to outside scholarship programs, students will receive support for international study from Elon. The Isabella Cannon Centre for International Studies awarded nearly $30,000 in need-based scholarships to more than 25 students for the Spring 2010 semester.
