Interest meeting to coordinate Haitian relief efforts – Jan. 19

A meeting for student groups, classes and individuals that have an interest in raising money, or providing other assistance to the people of Haiti in the wake of the recent earthquake, is scheduled for Tuesday as the university coordinates relief efforts on campus. Read this post for a message from Smith Jackson, vice president and dean of Student Life at Elon University.

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,

Many individual and groups/student organizations/classes have expressed interest in fundraisers and other ways to provide support and assistance to Haiti. So that these efforts may be coordinated and enhanced, anyone interested is invited to a meeting in Moseley 215 at noon on Tuesday, January 19. Present will be staff from Student Life, the Kernodle Center for Service Learning, and Student Activities. Please bring your ideas and calendars. Staff will be able to answer questions about fundraising and facilitate a discussion on ways the Elon community can be engaged helping to address the needs in Haiti next week, across the spring semester and beyond.

Donations are being accepted in Moseley today by Hillel, Periclean Scholars, SGA and Greek Life. Also, please refer anyone interested in making donations to e-net where several reputable humanitarian aid organizations are listed which are currently providing relief in Haiti. Several individuals have suggested additional organizations, and I encourage you to post them on e-net. But I would like to point out one agency with which we have some connection. Here’s the context. The common reading in 2006-2007 was Mountains Beyond Mountains by author Tracy Kidder. He has for years been involved with Partners in Health, or in Haitian Creole Zanmi Lasante. It has not been crippled by the earthquake as many of its 10 hospitals and clinics are still intact as they are far from the capital, Port-au-Prince where the earthquake hit hardest. It has been the largest health care provider in rural Haiti. As a result of this calamity, Partners in Health probably just became the largest health care provider still standing in all Haiti.

Thank you for the outpouring of support for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti.

Regards,

Smith Jackson

Vice President and Dean of Student Life
