Bateman Team Helping Bring Census Road Tour Bus to Campus Feb. 9

Elon University's 2010 Bateman Team campaign has partnered with the U.S. Census Bureau to bring the 2010 Census Portrait of America Road Tour Bus to campus.

The 2010 Census Portrait of American Road Tour event will be held on campus Tuesday, Feb. 9 in the Moseley parking lot from 8 a.m. to noon, and all students, faculty, staff and community members are encouraged to attend.

The bus will feature interactive kiosks and exhibits, along with Census representatives who will be able to provide more detailed information and answer questions about the upcoming Census. The tour is part of the largest civic outreach and awareness campaign in U.S. history, with a specific focus on the “hard to count” demographics, such as college-age students and economically disadvantaged community residents.

The Census is an important part of American government and by law all citizens and non-citizens are required to take the census, even if they live away from home at college. Census information affects the number of seats a state occupies in the U.S. House of Representatives, $400 billion in local and federal aid and market research.

Students will be able to meet with representatives to find out how the Census data is collected and how they may use the information in their future careers.

The 2010 Bateman Team consists of the following students: Molly Calpin, Kaitlin Carlin, Claire Derreberry, Ben Kaufman and Craig Orsi. Frances Ward-Johnson, an associate professor in the School of Communications, is the faculty adviser to the group.
