RecycleMania returns to Elon this spring for the university’s fourth year taking part in a national recycling competition involving hundreds of college and universities. Leaders hope to surpass the 73,638 pounds of recyclable materials collected last spring on campus during the contest.
Faculty and staff are encouraged to renew their own efforts to make use of the recycling bins around the university. Organizers say it’s not just students being asked to take part in the earth-friendly program.
The program officially kicked off Jan. 17 during Winter Term. The university monitors the amount of paper, cardboard, glass, plastic and aluminum collected on campus before reporting their measurements to national organizers on a weekly basis ending March 27. The goal of the event is to increase community awareness of campus recycling and waste minimization.
Weekly results at Elon will be posted online. An unprecedented 21 schools in North Carolina have signed up to participate, including Appalachian State, Davidson College, N.C. State, UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke University.
Throughout RecycleMania, look for campus competitions between residence halls, a recycled art competition and other special events on campus.
