Basic Spirituality is an inaugural Elon program designed for students interested in discussing and exploring their own spirituality and the larger spirituality of the world. We will meet six times in the spring semester for conversation and dialogue around “basic” and shared spiritual themes and ideals. This program is not designed to be overly academic, meaning we won’t be discussing each major world religion and their specific spiritual beliefs and practices. Instead, Basic Spirituality seeks to be an opportunity for students to connect and journey with others who are simply asking similar questions and exploring similar themes. Our focus is more directed at nurturing and discerning the spirituality that is within us, helping give language to our experiences and beliefs. Basic Spirituality will be an open and safe environment for each student.
We will be using the book by Paulo Coelho, entitled The Alchemist, as a guide for our initial conversations. The book will be provided to students free of charge. This book is a fictional story told in a hundred and fifty some pages, and by all accounts is a “fun read” – full of spiritual themes and reflections. To use the language of “The Alchemist,” Basic Spirituality is an invitation to discover your own personal legend and connect with the soul of the world.
**We are asking students to confirm with us that they will be part of this small group so that we can order the appropriate number of books. Space is limited.* *
We hope you’ll consider joining us in this adventure – and telling your friends about it. If you have any questions or would like to sign-up for this group, please email either Michelle Wrightman (mwrightman@elon.edu) or Chet Denlinger (cdenlinger@elon.edu).
