Paula Patch, lecturer in English, had an article published in the March 2010 issue of Teaching English in the Two-Year College (TETYC), a journal of the National Council of Teachers of English for faculty who teach the first two years of English in two- and four-year institutions.
The article, “Meeting Student Writers Where They Are: Using Wikipedia to Teach Responsible Scholarship,” describes an assignment Patch developed for Elon’s College Writing course that invites students to examine their assumptions about the quality of Web sources by engaging in a critical examination of Wikipedia. The article also includes a discussion of what Patch learned from students’ reflections about the experience of critically examining Wikipedia and how students think that experience might transfer to future research and writing situations.
Patch’s article was part of a special issue of TETYC focusing on 21st century literacies.
