After the third week of RecycleMania 2010, Elon University ranked fourth among North Carolina and first among Southern Conference institutions in cumulative pounds recycled (per capita), putting the university well ahead of its 2009 pace. RecycleMania, a 10-week competition taking part on campuses nationwide, challenges colleges and universities to reduce waste and raise awareness about recycling.
After the first week alone, Elon recycled more than 13,000 pounds of materials. See below for statistics for specific recycling categories.
Per Capita Classic
Overall, Elon placed 72nd out of the 453 reported entries nationwide with a 6.93-pound per capita weight volume. Elon placed fourth in North Carolina and first in the SoCon categories.
Targeted Materials: Aluminum/Plastic/Glass
Overall, Elon placed 7th out 284 entries for this category with a 3.49-pound per capita weight volume. The university ranked first in the state and first in the SoCon. Nationwide, Elon was 5th of 115 reporting private schools.
Targeted Materials: Cardboard
Overall, Elon placed 79th out of the 290 entries with a 2-pound per capita weight volume. In the state, Elon placed fifth, and first in the SoCon. Among private colleges and universities, Elon placed 53rd out of 124 entries.
Targeted Materials Paper
Overall, Elon placed 118th out of 276 entries with a 1.44-pound per capita weight volume. Elon ranks seventh in the state and first in the SoCon. Among private colleges and universities, Elon placed 59th out of 121 entries.
