Minnesota Alumni All NC College and University Social, April 24

Mark Your Calendars!

The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill’s Minnesota Carolina Club in Minnesota is planning its fourth annual barbecue event – an all North Carolina college and university alumni social to bring all people with roots from the Tar Heel state together.

Guests and anyone else with a North Carolina interest or connection are more than welcome to attend as well!

Our past events have drawn over 60 people representing 20 different North Carolina schools, and we continue to grow as word reaches more alumni in Minnesota. We hope to exceed that number this spring and continue this tradition in future years.

Saturday, April 24, 2010 – Gibbs Farm Museum
(St. Paul/Falcon Heights, MN)

Optional Service Project: 9 a.m. – Noon (Rain or Shine – we have indoor work, too!)

Noon – 2 p.m.: North Carolina (Eastern-style) Barbecue (flown up from N.C.!) Lunch with collard greens and your other favorite southern sides, desserts and ice tea in the barn.

Cost: $30/person (Children 12 and under, $18).

We hope to get a good turnout at the service project, but it is not required to attend – you can choose only to attend the Barbecue and social if you choose (or just the service project, without cost).

Since this will be an all-school event, we encourage all alumni to bring any yearbooks, school marching band CD’s, photos, memorabilia or materials from their schools for display, or membership information from your school’s alumni office. Or, simply bring anything that has a North Carolina theme – the common bond we all share. We’ll have a brief program in the afternoon to recognize the schools represented, but mostly it’s a chance to meet people and enjoy a good North Carolina-style meal together.

So, what’s this service project all about, anyway?

For those not familiar with the museum, Gibbs Farm is owned and operated by the Ramsey County Historical Society and is one of the last remaining rural farmsteads in the county which includes St. Paul. It is a quiet and peaceful place surrounded by urban activity and the University of Minnesota’s St. Paul campus. You will see live farm animals, an apple orchard, Native American herb gardens and cultural displays, an old schoolhouse, and the original home and furnishings of the late 1800s/early 1900s era.

The museum is open to the general public from May – October of each year, so we will be helping them prepare for the season opener. Since 2004, local UNC-Chapel Hill alumni (and several N.C. schools together since 2006) assisted the museum with some of the following indoor and outdoor needs (which are the same this year). :

• Gardening and/or weed removal
• Putting up winter storm windows or installing screens
• Light maintenance and indoor cleaning
• Making ornaments from old corn cobs and such (a great indoor activity for children!)
• Other tasks as needed, depending on ability and interest

People of all ages and abilities are welcome and needed, including families and children! Wear comfortable work clothes. School colors encouraged!

At the end of the morning, we will hold our all-North Carolina alumni barbecue and social gathering inside the barn on site (actually a meeting room with picnic tables – the animals live in a second barn!). We will also be treated to the farm’s Home Made Ice Cream and receive a free tour of the grounds, historic farmhouse, old one-room school house, animal barns and gardens. You can see photos and find out more information about the Ramsey County Gibbs Farm museum at www.rchs.com/gbbsfm2.htm .

Directions: The location is in Falcon Heights at the Northwest corner of Larpenteur and Cleveland Avenues, just north of the U of Minnesota’s St. Paul Campus. You can get there from I-94 to MN Hwy. 280 North and exit at Hennepin/Larpenteur Avenues. Go East through traffic light at Eustis Ave. and turn left at the next traffic light (Cleveland Ave.) – roughly 1 mile from Hwy. 280. From the North, you can come down I-35W/MN Hwy. 36 onto MN Hwy. 280 south and make the same exit.
