Tom Tiemann presented a paper "What Do Soccer Moms Do All Day," written with Steve DeLoach, at the Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association annual meeting in St. Louis on April 3.
Using the American Time Use Survey, they estimate that about 6 percent of all adult women in the U. S. live in the suburbs and spend at least an hour a day in the car with their children. Compared with other suburban women with children, these “soccer moms” on average spend two hours a day more with their families (outside of the car), less time with friends, more time shopping and engage in more different activities during the day. Tiemann and DeLoach also found that there are significant numbers of urban women and suburban men who spend an hour or more a day in the car with children.
