USA TODAY showcased three Elon University students on April 13 in photographs that accompanied a special section, “Sharing in the USA,” which reported on American volunteerism in the wake of several natural disasters.
The students were photographed while serving in Bay St. Louis, Miss., where Elon volunteers have visited nearly two dozen times since Hurricane Katrina-ravaged the region in August 2005.
The three students were helping to rebuild homes and clean the area through a partnership with Lutheran Episcopal Services. Lutheran Episcopal Services is one of the few remaining organizations in the area that are working to rebuild the community, according to the article.
Despite minimal funds, services are still needed, the newspaper reports. It cites 266 families still living in temporary housing and 1,132 families who remain in government-issued prefabricated cottages.
Students who took part in the trip included:
Lisa Bodine
James Burns
Nick Dioguardi
Justine Falkowski
Angie Lovelace
Jess Sikking
Christie Staton
Sarah Vavreck
Alex Walton
