Former Elon football players returned to campus April 23-24 to reconnect with teammates, forge connections with current athletes and watch the annual spring football game between the Maroon and White squads.
Alumni representing the four decades of Elon’s football program spoke with current Phoenix players during a career session on Friday night. The event has become a tradition during Head Coach Pete Lembo’s tenure.
“This is my second time back doing career night for the football team,” said Del Clark ’94. “We’re part of a legacy and just to be back is phenomenal.”
Bright and early Saturday morning, football alums joined other Elon alumni and Phoenix Club members for a golf tournament at the Challenge Golf Club in Graham, N.C. More than 80 people competed, and the foursome of Hunt Ward ’82 P’11, Dave Morton, Chad Sharp and John Keegan, director of development for athletics, took first place.
“Being here again is truly like being with family,” said Steve Vargas ’83. “It’s such a blessing to come back and be a part of something, no one can take that feeling away.”
Later in the evening, the alums and Phoenix fans braved a few raindrops for a barbecue at the Woods Center Plaza, then joined the crowd in Rhodes Stadium to watch the Phoenix play its annual spring game. Football alumnus Wade Williamson ’70 and loyal Phoenix Club member Phil Stuart served as the honorary coaches of the Maroon and White squads. The Maroon Team topped the White Team, 14-0.
“Everything that has happened around Elon is so exciting. The football team is on the right track,” said David Vaughn ’80.
