Campus Recreation is holding a 5K race on South Campus on Friday, an event that promotes "Exercise is Medicine Month" in May while collecting canned goods to support Loaves & Fishes Christian Food Ministry in Burlington.
Registration will begin at 3 p.m. with a start time at 3:30 p.m. The entry fee is two canned goods, and the cross country route is the same as the Turkey Trot course from November.
Preregister for the race at the front desk of Campus Recreation. Questions? Contact Campus Recreation at 336-278-PLAY.
Information will be given to students to raise awareness of “Exercise is Medicine Month,” an initiative sponsored by the American College of Sports Medicine to encourage primary care physicians to include exercise when designing treatment plans for patients.
“If we started getting physicians and patients talking to each other about exercise, we might get people to exercise on a regular basis,” said Wally Bixby, an associate professor of exercise science who is helping to lead the efforts at Elon to promote the month. “Everyone knows exercise is good for them, but not many people do it on a regular basis.”
Another reason for bringing the program to campus? Bixby said that research supports the idea that behaviors established in college are more likely to remain through the course of a lifetime.
Start exercising now, he said, and you’re more likely to stay with it throughout your life.
