Love School of Business honors students and faculty in annual awards program

Recipients of the endowed scholarships in the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business, with several of the donors whose gifts made the awards possible.

The program was attended by more than 100 people, including family of the honored students; donors whose gifts made several scholarships possible; and most of the business school faculty whose input helped determine the 2009 award recipients.

Academic Achievement Awards

Academic Excellence Award in Accounting

This award is given to a senior Accounting major who has demonstrated superior academic achievement and possesses potential for intellectual and professional growth.

Challenge and Expect Award in Accounting

This award is presented to a senior majoring in Accounting who has demonstrated excellent academic achievement and growth.

John Kappas Economics Award
Cameron DePuy
This award goes to the senior Economics major who best demonstrates enthusiasm for Economics, potential for leadership, and classroom excellence. It is named in honor of the late John Kappas, a 1985 Elon graduate.

NCCPA Exam Award

This award is provided by the North Carolina State Board of Certified Public Accountant Examiners to provide a deserving graduating accounting major the opportunity to take the Uniform CPA exam free of charge.

Benjamin Grover Johnston Award

This award honors the sophomore majoring in Accounting, Business Administration, or Economics who has the highest GPA in the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business. Dr. and Mrs. James W. Johnston established this award in memory of Dr. Johnston’s brother, Benjamin Grover Johnston.

Excellence in Teaching
Christina Benson
The Martha and Spencer Love School of Business Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching recognizes a faculty member who exemplifies the Elon University teacher-scholar model. The recipient of the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching is outstanding in the classroom, engages students in the learning process, maintains academic rigor, and provides evidence of commitment to the intellectual development of students through mentoring and related activities.

Comments by Mary Gowan, dean of the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business:

“The 2010 recipient of this award embraces teaching with intense energy and enthusiasm. This person’s chair states that she has been a consistent contributor at the highest level to our mission to ‘Deliver an exceptional learning experience that prepares participants for success in a complex business environment’ and to ‘Enhance the culture of intellectual curiosity’ of our students by ‘Provid[ing] opportunities for undergraduate . . . students to be involved in research activities, service learning, and action learning projects that develop critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and problem solving skills.’ She has carried a diverse and demanding teaching load, and has met the challenges in doing so at an exceptionally high level, earning high scores on her teaching evaluations in all of her courses and receiving student comments commending her for her deep knowledge of and enthusiasm for the subjects she teaches and her ability to relate her ‘real-world’ experiences to the material. She is a professor who expects her students to be involved and sets an example for them. She has designed into her courses exercises and projects that require students to dive deep into the topic and think deeply about the subject. Her use of cases and action learning both in and out of the classroom have exposed her students to the ethical and legal challenges in actual organizations and enabled her students to represent the LSB and Elon well, often bringing home top honors in competitions.”

Excellence in Scholarship

The Martha and Spencer Love School of Business Dean’s Award for Excellence in Scholarship recognizes one or more faculty members each year whose scholarly work has a significant intellectual impact in keeping with the Elon scholar-mentor model. Selection factors for this award include publication or presentation of peer-reviewed research in quality outlets and evidence that the faculty member engages in scholarship related activities. These activities might include supporting the scholarly endeavors of colleagues, advancing the school’s reputation, and mentoring students in undergraduate research.

Comments by Mary Gowan on Earl Honeycutt:

“The first recipient is a professor who frequently publishes his work in highly regarded journals in his field, serves in editorial board roles, and mentors other faculty. This past calendar year, he had two articles published in peer-reviewed journals and had four other articles ‘in press.’ Other research projects were presented at conferences or submitted for future publication. He frequently involves other LSB faculty in his research activities, has published two textbooks, and been recognized as an Elon Distinguished Professor. All of these activities are significant in their own right, however, he is receiving this award this year in recognition of the work he has done to first lay the foundation for the endowment and then to guide the opening of the Chandler Family Professional Sales Center. The Center, which opened officially this academic year, provides a ‘place’ for teaching, action learning, and scholarship to come together to enhance the education of our students and provides a resource for education and research for businesses. As such, the Center is a demonstration of how one can leverage research to enhance the educational opportunities for our students and the outreach opportunities in our community and beyond.

And on Casey DiRienzo:

“The second recipient of this year’s Martha and Spencer Love School of Business Dean’s Award for Scholarship is an active scholar who publishes regularly and frequently in high quality journals in her field. Among her recent scholarship activities are five articles published or in press in 2009 and an invited book chapter. Her scholarship often includes other faculty in the LSB and she often takes on the role of statistician for the projects in which she is invited to participate outside her specific research streams. Her work with another professor on global terrorism and corruption is timely and important. One of her major contributions in the area of scholarship this year, however, was the award of a $50,000 grant from a financial services firm. This project was initiated by this professor and brought together faculty and a student from multiple disciplines. The project led to new learning on the part of all involved and resulted in creative synergies that answered the questions posed in the grant. Without the initiative and scholarship skills of this professor, the grant would not have been possible.”

Exemplary Service – External

The Martha and Spencer Love School of Business Dean’s Award for Exemplary Service – External recognizes a member of the larger Elon University community who has contributed in meaningful ways to the ongoing welfare and betterment of the LSB. This contribution can take the form of assisting LSB with a specific program or project or providing ongoing support for LSB activities.

“The 2010 recipient is someone who has worn many hats at Elon University over the years. She is always available to offer her wisdom and guidance, and does so calmly and patiently. This year, she probably didn’t have a clue how much time she would be devoting to LSB issues but we are deeply appreciative of the time she spent working through our challenges and concerns. The person who worked with her most closely, describes it this way: ‘Throughout the LSB’s curriculum revision process, she provided service and guidance that was clearly above and beyond our expectations and the requirements of her job. She was always available, even on Saturdays and Sundays, to answer questions, offer advice, and provide the occasional ‘pep-talk’. The passing of our 4 new majors, 2 new minors, and a new degree is largely due to her expertise and guidance. The LSB owes this person a sincere ‘Thank you’ for her efforts.’ Upon further reflection, we didn’t think a thank you was enough, so we decided to name her as the recipient of The Martha and Spencer Love School of Business Dean’s Award for Exemplary Service—External because of her activities over this year and the many contributions in past years.”

Exemplary Service – Faculty

The Martha and Spencer Love School of Business Dean’s Award for Exemplary Service–Faculty recognizes one or more faculty members each year who has contributed in meaningful ways to the ongoing welfare and betterment of the college, university and profession. This award follows from the Elon servant-leadership model. Selection is based on service in the preceding year plus overall willingness to volunteer one’s time when needed and to carry new ideas to reality

“The 2010 recipient of the Dean’s Award for Exemplary Service – LSB Faculty member, is someone else who has worn many hats recently, and who has consistently provided strong leadership regardless of the hat worn at the moment. He is receiving this award today because of his willingness to say ‘yes’ but also because when he says ‘yes’ he has made a commitment to ensure the job is done and done well. The Business Fellows program, MBA program, LSB assessment process, and now the Department of Management are just some of the examples of programs that have benefited from his leadership. Under his leadership, the Department of Management has made significant strides in coalescing as a department and assisted in finalizing a new curriculum that is timely and relevant and will enhance the marketability of our students. His willingness to take on new and often difficult assignments exemplifies servant leadership. A colleague said of him he, ‘deals with an occasionally cantankerous group with absolute fairness and a great sense of humor. Can be counted on to represent the interest and views of the department, even if those views are not necessarily his own.’

The Martha and Spencer Love School of Business Dean’s Award for Exemplary Service – Staff recognizes a staff member who has contributed in meaningful ways to the ongoing welfare and betterment of the LSB. This contribution includes performing duties above and beyond the staff member’s regular functions to support and advance the Love School of Business.

“The 2010 recipient of The Martha and Spencer Love School of Business Dean’s Award for Exemplary Service – Staff can be counted on to perform at a high level consistently. When I first arrived, I met with each staff member and talked about what they liked and didn’t like about their jobs. In a conversation with this staff member, I learned that she really liked data—managing it, manipulating it, whatever—just saw data as fun. Neither of us knew that a few short months later, she would have the opportunity to move into an important role in the dean’s office where she would have lots of data to manage, manipulate, massage, and do all other manner of things with to make the data do more than be data. But that is not all she is good at managing. It is because of this staff member that our adjuncts and new faculty receive their contracts with accurate information and in a timely manner. It is because of this person that our advisory board meetings run like clockwork. And, it is this person who made sure that the logistics of our AACSB team visit were almost perfectly managed—actually, I think they were perfectly managed, and that is even more noteworthy because she came back to work a few days early from her maternity leave to take care of everything. I could go on and on about how she makes life easier for all of us in the dean’s office—and many of you—but I think you get the picture.”

2010-11 Endowed Scholarships

The A. Vance Beck, Sr. and Gwendolyn D. Beck Scholarship

Established in honor of Vance and Gwendolyn Beck by his employer (the Belk-Beck group of department stores), the award goes to a rising junior Business Administration major with financial need.

The David O. Bowden Economics Scholarship
Kaylyn Swankoski
Established by David Bowden ’70, the David O. Bowden Economics Scholarship is awarded to a rising senior majoring in economics who has been active in the department and demonstrated potential for future success. At Elon, Mr. Bowden was a double major in business administration and economics. He went on to earn his JD from the University of Miami.

The Janie E. Council Scholarship

This award was established in 1983 in memory of Janie E. Council by former friends, students and Mr. Robert Sandell II. Mrs. Council began her teaching career at Elon University in 1960 as an associate professor of business education and received the outstanding teaching award from the SGA in 1970. This scholarship is for rising senior Business Administration or Accounting majors with financial need.

The Doherty Scholars are the top rising juniors and seniors in the business school’s entrepreneurship concentration. They will become the core leaders in the establishment of new entrepreneurial ventures on campus. These scholarships have been established through a generous gift from Edward and Joan Doherty to endow the Doherty Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership. Ed and Joan are the parents of three children including Kerry, a 2007 Elon graduate. Ed is a member of Elon’s Board of Trustees and together with Joan serves on Elon’s Parents Council.

The Love Award for Excellence in Business Leadership

The prestigious Love Awards for Excellence in Business Leadership will honor and provide financial support to students who have demonstrated excellence and unusual promise for further development in intellect, imagination, creativity, character, moral courage and leadership. Founded by Martha and Spencer Love in 1947, the Martha and Spencer Love Foundation has generously supported Elon since the 1950s and made a major gift to Elon in 1985 to name the business school.

The Calvert C. and Margaret H. McGregor Scholarship
Virginia Mayer
This scholarship was established by Calvert and Audrey McGregor in honor of his parents C. Calvert and Margaret H. McGregor. Dr. McGregor is an associate professor and the former chair of the Accounting department here at Elon. This scholarship is for a rising junior or senior Accounting student with preference given to students living in Alamance County, the Triad, or North Carolina.

The John and Helene Sparks Scholarship for Business

This scholarship was established by John and his wife Helene in 1981. John Sparks graduated from Elon in 1950 with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration. He is a certified public accountant and former faculty member in the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business. This scholarship is for rising junior or senior Business Administration majors with financial need.

This scholarship was established in 1989 in memory of Fred Gilliam, Sr. by the partners in his law firm (James Moser, Jr., Maurice Jennings, and John Vernon III). Fred was a 1942 Elon graduate. He participated in orchestra and was part of Kappa Psi Nu. This scholarship is for rising junior and senior Accounting majors with financial need.

The R. Cruse Lewis Master Pools Guild/Love School of Business Endowment Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 1998 in honor of Cruse’s retirement from Master Pools Guild. Mr. R. Cruse Lewis is a former employee of Swimout Overflow Components, Inc. and Burlington Industries. He received a Citizen’s Service Award in November 2000 and has served on the Board of Visitors here at Elon since 1996. This scholarship is for any rising junior or senior business school major with preference given to international students.

The Dudley Ray Watson Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established in memory of Dudley Ray Watson by his parents, J. D. and Eunice Watson. Professor Watson served as a member of the business faculty at Elon College from 1960 to 1963. This scholarship is for a rising senior Business Administration major.

Wachovia Bank, N.A. Scholarship
Suji Kim
This scholarship was established in 1987 as the First Union Bank Scholarship and later renamed when First Union and Wachovia banks merged. The scholarship provides assistance to rising juniors or seniors enrolled in the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business.

The Linda Thompson Weavil Endowed Scholarship
Randall Borror
This scholarship was established in 1992 by Dr. Linda Thompson Weavil and her husband Robert B. Weavil. Professor Weavil retired from the faculty of the Love School of Business in 2001. This scholarship is for a rising junior, senior or MBA Business Administration major with preference to students living in Alamance County, the Triad, or North Carolina.

The John L. Sills, Jr. Scholarship

This scholarship was established in honor of John L. Sills, Jr. by Riverview Narrow Fabrics in August 1987. John was treasurer at Riverview Narrow Fabrics, Inc. Mr. Sills lives in Greensboro with his wife, Martha. They have one son, John L. Sills, III, a 1989 Elon graduate. This scholarship is for rising junior Accounting majors with financial need.

The David A. Stevens ’81 Internship Scholarship

Established in 2007 by David and Beth Stevens, this scholarship is awarded to business students to help defray the cost of completing an internship.

The Charles David Smith Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established in memory of Charles D. Smith by his parents Randolph Smith and Joyce Miller, and a lifelong friend George Logan. Charles died in a plane crash near Roanoke, Virginia. He graduated from Elon with a Bachelor of Science degree in Banking and Finance in 1997. He was part of the men’s tennis team and a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. This scholarship is for a rising junior or senior Business Administration major with financial need and preference is given to students from Virginia.

The Mills Family Endowed Scholarship

Established in 2006 by Willard “Bill” Mills, Jr., and his mother, Helen Mills Gardner, this scholarship is awarded to a deserving student from North Carolina with preference given to a student majoring in business. Bill graduated from Elon in 1969 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

The Mark A. Horsburgh Study Abroad Scholarship
Andrea Brooke
This award, established in 2007 by the Horsburgh family, provides scholarship assistance to a business fellow so that he or she can study abroad. The fund was created in honor of Mark A. Horsburgh, a 2007 Elon graduate and business fellow who studied abroad in Australia and Peru.

The Andras Family Award

This award was established in 2007 with gifts from the Andras Foundation and David and Anne Andras, parents of senior business major Cody Andras. The scholarship is awarded to a rising senior within the college whose excellent work both inside and outside of the classroom models a pathway to future success in business.

The Samuel L. Burke Endowed Scholarship

This fund was established in 2008 by 1989 Elon graduate Samuel Burke to provide assistance for deserving accounting majors who are likely to demonstrate the value of their Elon education in their future careers.

The Rose Family Endowed Scholarship

This fund was established by Harry and Carol Rose in 2008 to help defray the cots of a business-related internship experience for any business major.

Pope Foundation Undergraduate Research Scholars Award

This program provides funds in the form of stipends and a spending account for rising Love School of Business seniors to work with faculty on a research project. Each year business school faculty will select a research topic focused on a critical issue facing the free enterprise system. The Pope Undergraduate Research Scholars Program will establish standards of creativity and excellence that inspire others.

The Department of Economics Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2005 by members of the Department of Economics for an economics major with a record of academic excellence within the major who exhibits a commitment to social responsibility.

The James T. Toney Endowment Fund

This award was established by members of the Department of Economics in honor of Professor Jim Toney. The scholarship is for economics majors with financial need and is to be used for off-campus travel.

The Edward and Rita Galante Endowment for Business Internships

This fund was established in 2008 in honor of Edward and Rita Galante by their son Donald and his wife Amanda. The award is to help business majors enjoy the unique educational opportunities associated with internships related to their major.
