Elon University senior Kelsey Johnson, from Orchard Park, N.Y., has been awarded a scholarship under the Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation Program.
The highly competitive SMART scholarship program promotes the education, recruitment and retention of outstanding undergraduate and graduate students in science, math and engineering. The scholarship is funded through the Department of Defense and administered by the American Society for Engineering Education.
The award includes full tuition and related educational expenses, and a monthly living stipend. The Army Operational Test Command sponsored Johnson, and she will intern there this summer as well as be hired as a civilian employee following the completion of her graduate degree.
Johnson will receive a B.S. in Mathematics and B.A. in Physics cum laude from Elon on May 22. She will attend Duke University in fall 2010 to pursue her graduate degree in the Master of Engineering Management program.
