A renowned scholar in the field of religious studies, a respected Elon colleague and an influential teacher of Elon students for more than two decades, Jeffrey Pugh, Maude Sharpe Powell Professor of Religious Studies, has been named the 2010 Distinguished University Scholar.

April Post, a 2001 Elon graduate, returned to North Carolina in 2004 and immediately made an impact in her classes, her church and for local Hispanic students and their families. In recognition of her efforts, Post, lecturer in Spanish, has received the 2010 Periclean Award.

To those who know Eric Hall, associate professor of exercise science, it should come as no surprise that he has been named the 2010 Ward Family Excellence in Mentoring Award recipient. He lives to mentor students. Literally.

Stephen Byrd, an assistant professor of education, and Carolyn Stuart, an associate professor of education, joined nine special education teacher candidates May 5 at the First Annual Teacher-Research Conference sponsored by the Triad Teacher Researchers at UNC-Greensboro.

L. Kimberly Epting, an assistant professor of psychology, and Elon seniors Evan Gallena, Stephanie Hicks, Kristen Riggs and junior Traci Weisberg, presented their research March 10-13 in Chattanooga, Tenn., at the annual meeting of the Southeastern Psychological Association.

Stephen Byrd, assistant professor of education, led a poster presentation titled “Parents and RTI: Building a Framework for Family Involvement” at the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) Convention and Expo of in Nashville, Tenn.

Assistant Professor Omri Shimron (music) and Adjunct Instructor Virginia Novine-Whittaker performed a recital on Saturday, May 1, as part of a local fundraising campaign supporting the Greensboro chamber music series Music for a Great Space.

Thomas Erdmann, professor of music, had his article, "Finding His Own Way Through Hard Work," about trumpeter Christian Scott, published in the June 2010 issue of the International Trumpet Guild Journal.

The Elon University Phoenix Piano Trio (Dan Skidmore, violin, Meaghan Skogen, Cello, and Victoria Fischer Faw, piano) presented a benefit concerton April 24 for the Highland Camerata in Independence, Va.

John Burbridge, along with two other academics, selected the 2009 Seymour Medal recipient at the Seymour Medal Conference in Cleveland, Ohio, on May 1. The Seymour Medal is given by the Society for American Baseball Research and honors the best book of baseball history or biography published during the preceding calendar year.
