The Phoenix overcame a 2-1 deficit with five runs in the top of the seventh inning to defeat UNC-Greensboro and capture its first Southern Conference tournament title, 6-3, in Chattanooga, Tenn., on Friday, May 14. Elon will face the host University of Georgia Bulldogs in the Athens Regional of the 2010 NCAA Softball Tourament on Friday, May 21.
In addition to the Bulldogs, the Phoenix join Radford and Florida State in the Athens Regional.
Last week, Elon, the SoCon tournament’s No. 2 seed, clinched the conference title in the double-elimination tournament and also a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The championship marks the first time an Elon women’s sports team has captured a conference tournament title since joining the Southern Conference in 2003. It’s also the first tournament title for an Elon women’s sports team since women’s soccer took home the Big South tournament title in 1999.
