Throughout the 2009-2010 school year, Leadership Fellows at Elon Law have been making a difference in the Greensboro community by participating in Groceries on Wheels. The nonprofit health and wellness organization provides food and social interaction opportunities to seniors with low incomes in Guilford County.
Since the fall, twelve Leadership Fellows have delivered donated groceries to a recurring group of households and recipients. In addition to delivering groceries, the fellows spend time getting to know seniors of limited means in the Greensboro community.
The fellows selected Groceries on Wheels, initially proposed by first-year student Julie Stainback, after some deliberation on where their limited numbers could make the biggest difference.
“The involvement in the program has been extremely rewarding for me personally,” first-year student Mark York said. “Every visit bringing groceries and friendship to our community’s seniors leaves me with a sense that it is they who are giving more to me. I have learned so much about the history of Greensboro from those who experienced it firsthand. Our discussions also help to keep the stress of law school in perspective.”
As part of Elon University School of Law’s mission to infuse its legal education with an emphasis on leadership development, the school formed the Leadership Fellows program in 2009. The inaugural group of 12 Leadership Fellows enrolled in fall 2009.
The Leadership Fellows participating in Groceries on Wheels are: Melissa Westmoreland, Jeffrey Koehler, Ashley Clark, Carrie Osborne, Jim Stanton, Mark York, Julie Stainback, Ashley Hansen, Richard Munday, Marina Emory, Kathy Stewart, and Collin Cooper.
The Leadership Fellows’ participation in Groceries on Wheels has inspired other Elon Law students to get involved in the program. First-year student Brad Bell, for example, now delivers groceries once a month to a recurring set of low-income households in the region.
