Screech, head of the Department of Art and Archaeology at SOAS, University of London, will reconstruct through images and texts the journey to the Yoshiwara District of Edo-period Japan. Although the pleasure district itself is well known through woodblock prints of the “floating world,” the significance of the trip there has until now been ignored by art historians.
