Described by reporter Michael D. Abernethy as "firm, fair, level-headed, hard working and even good humored when the moment strikes," J. B. Allen Jr. '63, an Alamance County judge for more than three decades, stepped down from the bench in July. On the eve of his retirement, Allen spoke with Abernethy for a profile in the (Burlington, N.C.) Times-News.
“These are the qualities that have made Allen, 71, one of the most-revered figures in Alamance County. For nearly 38 years, he’s presided as a judge in Alamance County, 23 of those years as a superior court judge, elected to three eight-year terms beginning in 1986,” Abernethy wrote.
“‘I think superior court judge is one of the best jobs in North Carolina. That’s where the action is. We have to make awesome decisions. When you’re hearing a death-penalty case, every decision you make can be the difference between life and death,'” Allen said in the article.
