Debra Briggs Hennelly '88, a mathematics teacher at Southeastern Stokes Middle School, was named the 2010 Stokes County (N.C.) Teacher of the Year earlier this month. Hennelly has been working at SES, where she attended junior high, for 16 years.
On Sept. 2, The Stokes News profiled Hennelly, who grew up in a family of Stokes County teachers. Originally a social work major at Elon, Hennelly found her calling to teach when volunteering at a children’s home during her college years.
“Teaching is more than the money. You do make a difference in young people’s lives daily whether it is by teaching them how to do math or just by speaking to them in the hall,” Hennelly says in the article.
