From the Cary News (9/22/10): The town council is expected to vote next week on a new public records policy that will govern access to municipal databases containing thousands of e-mail addresses for citizens in Morrisville.
The scheduled vote comes just two months after state lawmakers took aim at solicitors who have used public records laws to obtain similar databases from Morrisville and other towns in Wake County and from Yadkin County.
A new law that took effect July 9 grants Wake County and its 12 towns limited rights to withhold residents’ e-mail addresses from advertisers who request them en masse.
County and town officials in Wake still are required to make the lists available for public inspection.
But they are no longer required to offer copies of the lists.
