Read this note for a message from Elon University President Leo M. Lambert about the death of Elon student Michelle Pfleger on Sept. 24.
Message from President Leo M. Lambert to the Elon community:
It is with deep sorrow that I inform you that first-year Elon student Michelle A. Pfleger died this morning. Michelle was walking to her 9:25 a.m. class when she collapsed in front of McMichael Science Center. Emergency responders rushed her to Alamance Regional Medical Center where she passed away. Doctors have not yet identified the medical condition that caused her death.
Michelle was from Hackettstown, N.J., and was an Odyssey Scholar at Elon and the recipient of the Mac Mahon Family Scholarship. She lived on campus at Danieley Center “G.” She was the daughter of Joan Cummins and Jack Rudewick of Hackettstown.
The tragic death of a student is devastating to our community and we want to reach out to friends and acquaintances who knew Michelle. Associate Chaplain Phil Smith and Leon Williams, director of the Multicultural Center, will be working with Michelle’s Elon 101 class, her suitemates and her fellow Odyssey Scholars. Counseling Services will be available for students who would like to talk about their deep feelings of loss.
The Catholic community of faith at Elon University will celebrate the 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. Masses on at the Elon Community Church, at the corner of Haggard and Williamson avenues on Sunday, Sept. 26, for the peaceful repose of Michelle, and for the consolation of her family and friends.
People who knew Michelle and wish to mourn her passing and celebrate her life are invited to a Gathering of Friends at 8 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 26, in Moseley Center Room 215. The gathering is being coordinated by the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life.
