Gerald Dillashaw, former dean of the School of Education, was honored Sept. 24 by the North Carolina Association of Colleges and Teacher Educators during its annual Teacher Education Forum.
The Distinguished Service Award recognizes Dillashaw’s dedication to improving teacher education in North Carolina and his service as the treasurer of the North Carolina Teacher Education Forum and The North Carolina Association of Colleges and Teacher Educators from 1996-2010.
The full statement is as follows:
Jerry Dillashaw came to Elon University in 1992 where he became Dean of the School of Education. He served in that position through 2009, some 16 years, and led the Teacher Education programs through many successful NCATE and NC DPI accreditations. He was instrumental in the successful implementation of the special education and the expansion of the Master of Education program to include a special education cohort, a gifted cohort, and an elementary education cohort.
Elon University hosts an international study program in Costa Rica, and faculty reside there for a semester at a time. Jerry is the faculty-in-residence in Costa Rica for the Spring Semester 2011. He continues to Spanish and becomes more fluent during every visit. He will be teaching an interdisciplinary course and advising Elon University students while there. In fact as soon as this award has been presented, Jerry will head back to Elon for a 3 p.m. meeting with students who are going to Costa Rica.
Jerry also has been an active member of teacher education task forces and teams throughout the years as policies, procedures, and processes were modified and developed. He was a member of many training sessions for NC DPI site visit evaluation teams, and he was actively involved in the development of the most Re-Visioning Movement. Kathy Sullivan always knew that she could count on Jerry to roll up his sleeves and accomplish the task that was set forth. As well he served on many, many accreditation teams, often chairing the state team or serving as the liaison between the state team and NCATE evaluators.
Jerry began to serve as the Treasurer of NC Association of Colleges for Teacher Education some 16 years ago, and in that capacity, has been the Treasurer of the Fall Teacher Education Forum for all of those years. He was instrumental in bringing the finances of the two organizations NC Association for Colleges of Teacher Education and the NC Association for Teacher Education when they merged in 2005 into our current NC-ACTE. As you will remember from our financial reports, the financial health of NC-ACTE has been well managed and reported by Jerry all of these years. He has remained a Board Member at my request as the “Special Advisor.” I seek advice from Jerry often.
I also understand that Jerry and Betty make visits regularly to Ashevillle to visit their granddaugher Abby to be with their daughters and families.
Jerry, this organization and the NC Teacher Education Forum is honored that you chose to provide such invaluable service to us for so many years. Certainly you have gone the proverbial second mile.
Therefore, it is my privilege to award you this framed certificate that reads:
