October 6:
PARIS
Cédric Klapisch
2007 / 130 min.
In Cédric Klapisch’s wistful ensemble film about the City of Light, characters of vastly different backgrounds intersect, providing a sense of the multitudes and complexities contained within one of the world’s greatest metropolises. Regardless of whether you’ve never been to Paris or have visited several times, Klapisch’s stunning compositions of the city will inspire you to book a flight to the French capital right away.

October 13:
TWO DAYS IN PARIS
Julie Delpy
2007 / 93 min.
Jack is a sharp, neurotic New York designer; his girlfriend Marion is a smart, cagey, French photographer. They’ve been together in New York for two years and are spending two days in Paris. The trip puts their relationship to the ultimate test. Delpy weaves brilliant humor with a myriad of intellectual, political and psychological musings. She takes the stereotypical French versus American debates further and deeper, playing on both truth and the often total absurdity of this complex relationship.

October 20:
LE VOYAGE DU BALLON ROUGE
FLIGHT OF THE RED BALLOON
Hou Hsiao-hsien
2007 / 113 min.
A mysterious red balloon affectionately follows Simon, a precocious, wide-eyed seven-year-old boy, around Paris. His mother Suzanne is a puppeteer. Single mother of two, Simon and an older sister, Suzanne went through a bad divorce and is now struggling with her multi-tasking as an artist, mother, and landlord. She decides to hire Song Fang as Simon’s nanny. Inspired by Albert Lamorisse’s classic 1956 short The Red Balloon, the fluid, unparalleled elegance of Hou’s first French-language film finds grace in the simplest details, and gently discovers a Paris previously unseen.

October 27:
FAUTEUIL D’ORCHESTRE
AVENUE MONTAIGNE

Danièle Thompson
2006 / 100 min.
Jessica, who comes from the French countryside, is a waitress in a chic Parisian café. Her customers include a famous soap-opera actress, a Hollywood director, an art collector, and a concert pianist. Despite the social and financial differences between them, her curiosity and enthusiasm allow for meaningful connections between her and these urbane Parisians.

November 3:
PARIS JE T’AIME
Miscellaneous directors
2006 / 116 min.
Aa patchwork of 18 short films by different directors. Each one had to tell a story located in one of Paris’ “arrondissements” in less than five minutes and on a relatively tight budget. This atypical collective film bears the hallmark of major international filmmakers and the names of stellar actors such as Natalie Portman, Gena Rowlands, Elijah Wood, Ben Gazzara and Catherine Deneuve.
