Colonnades, Elon University's literary magazine, received a 2010 national Magazine Pacemaker Award from the Associated Collegiate Press over the weekend at the organization's joint conference with College Media Advisers in Louisville. The Pacemaker is the highest honor ACP gives to its members.
The ACP Magazine Pacemakers in the literary category—in which Colonnades was submitted—were judged by Milkweed Editions. They award general excellence in collegiate magazines in two categories: feature and literary magazines. Entries are judged based on their content, quality of writing and editing, photography, art and graphics, layout and design, and overall concept or theme.
Colonnades submitted its most recent issue, “Public Spaces,” which was produced under the leadership of Arie Saint ’10. It includes submissions from students in fiction, poetry, nonfiction, 35mm photography, digital photography, art and reviews. This is the first time Colonnades has been named a Pacemaker finalist. The organization is advised by English associate professor Drew Perry and English assistant professor Tita Ramirez.
Colonnades was among 19 finalists in the overall competition, but one of just three winners in the literary, four-year school category. The other winners were Sanskrit from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and Windhover from North Carolina State University.
The Pendulum, Elon’s weekly student newspaper, and its online component were honored for being finalists in the Newspaper Pacemaker and Online Pacemaker competitions, as well. In addition, Caroline Matthews ’10, a journalism major who served as design chief at the Pendulum and a design editor of last year’s Colonnades, placed second in the Infographic competition.
Pendulum student leaders Anna Johnson (managing editor), Jack Dodson (news editor), Caitlin O’Donnell (news editor), Lauren Ramsdell (arts and entertainment editor), Gabriela Szewcow (design chief) and Melissa Kansky (multimedia editor) were in attendance at the ACP/CMA national college media convention in Louisville from Oct. 27-31 with adviser Colin Donohue, who was given a Honor Roll Adviser Award from College Media Advisers.
