Assistant professor Jeff Carpenter in the School of Education recently presented to an audience of pre- and in-service teachers at the North Carolina English Teacher Association's Annual Conference at Wake Forest University.
“Parallel Literary Universes on Facebook & in Textspeak” discussed how students can deepen their understanding of literary texts, and demonstrate that understanding, through the creation and analysis of Facebook universes that parallel texts, and textspeak summaries.
Carpenter, who previously taught English at Carrboro High School, in Carrboro, N.C., presented alongside current Carrboro seniors Maddie Gilmore, Molly Scanga and Melina Smith. Carpenter explained several assignments he created, while the students presented examples of their work for the assignments and discussed what they had learned from the experiences.
