James G. Exum, Jr., former Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court, member of the Elon University Law School Advisory Board, and Distinguished Jurist-in-Residence at Elon Law, has been appointed by the North Carolina State Bar Council to serve on the Board of Trustees of the North Carolina State Bar Plan for Interest on Lawyers’ Trust Accounts (NC IOLTA).
“NC IOLTA is a non-profit program created by the State Bar and approved by the North Carolina Supreme Court,” the organization’s website states. “NC IOLTA works with lawyers and banks across the state to collect net interest income generated from lawyers’ general, pooled trust accounts for the purpose of funding grants to providers of civil legal services for the indigent and to programs that further the administration of justice.”
The organization has provided over $50 million since 1984 to provide legal assistance to the poor.
Exum, who began his service on the NC IOLTA Board on September 1, was appointed to a three-year term as trustee. His tenure began with participation in the NC IOLTA trustees’ long-range planning and orientation meeting in September.
