Elon Law's executive coach in residence Bonnie McAlister presented at KARAMAH's Eighth Annual Law and Leadership Summer Program, held July 12 through July 23. KARAMAH is a human rights organization of Muslim women lawyers dedicated to promoting dignity for all human beings through education and legal outreach.
The annual Law and Leadership Summer Program in Washington, D.C. aims to educate Muslim women about gender-equitable principles valued in Islam from a legal perspective.
McAlister taught two sessions entitled “Leadership and Communication” and “Leadership and Public Speaking.” During the sessions, McAlister spoke about elements of effective communication in the legal profession.
The Law and Leadership Summer Program brought together an international group of law students from the U.S. and abroad to provide women with leadership skills, conflict resolution training, and an understanding of gender-equitable Islamic law.
Leary Davis, acting executive director of KARAMAH and founding Dean Emeritus at Elon University School of Law, provided the opening keynote address at the conference. Davis urged participants not to be discouraged by unfavorable stereotypes of women in the workplace, which modern research has shown to be unfounded.
At Elon Law, McAlister works with students in the areas of leadership development and communications. She comes to Elon following distinguished teaching careers at the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL) and Davidson College. She is an experienced communications consultant to businesses and organizations. She has taught seminars nationwide for nearly 30 years, specializing in leadership, public speaking, group dynamics and communication skills.
