Lu Johnson, a member of the Class of 2011 at Elon Law, was recently selected as a Senior Editor for The Southern Region Black Law Students Association Law Journal (SRBLSJ). The Journal, established in 2005, was created "as an answer to law students' and other professionals' concern of a lack of a representative voice for issues facing southern Blacks," its website states.
The mission of the journal, according to the SRBLS website, is “to serve as a forum for sound legal scholarship reflecting the interests of southern Black communities that will stimulate thought and simultaneously trigger positive change.”
As Senior Editor of the SRBLS, Johnson will be responsible for ensuring that all citations within the Journal are consistent with the 18th edition of the Bluebook Citation Guide. Additionally, Johnson will be responsible for ensuring that all articles and notes within the Journal comply with Strunk and White’s Elements of Style. Johnson will also work with the Managing Editor to ensure that each work is stylistically appealing.
Johnson has served as the President of Elon Law’s Chapter of the Black Law Students Association (BLSA). During her tenure, Elon’s BLSA sponsored Black History Month initiatives, such as an email series highlighting influential African-Americans in the legal community and Black History Trivia. Under Johnson’s leadership, the BLSA also co-sponsored Elon Law’s Second Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. forum, at which Franklin McCain, one of the “Greensboro Four,” discussed his participation in the Greensboro civil rights movement.
Johnson has also been involved with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Clinic, and has completed summer internships with the Guilford County Public Defender’s Office and the Greensboro office of Legal Aid of North Carolina.
