On September 27, Elon Law professor Martha Peters presented at the University of Florida Law School. In a presentation geared towards students in the first-year class, Peters highlighted the importance of self-assessment to help students study the law and prepare for law practice more effectively.
During her presentation, Peters focused on the intersection of self-awareness and leadership, exploring parts of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and explaining how the assessment tool can be used for career development.
“Developing the self-awareness that comes from using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator will have immediate benefits for students, not only in understanding their own learning styles and communication preferences, but also for the benefits to their interpersonal relationships,” explained Peters.
Additionally, Peters examined the concept of emotional intelligence in her talk, explaining that businesses and, increasingly, law firms recognize emotional intelligence is a predictor of career success.
Peters teaches within the academic skills program at Elon Law, providing instruction and coaching to students to support the development of effective study techniques, including approaches to reading cases, writing briefs, and organizing materials, as well as techniques for time management and test taking.
