College Chapel: Belief and Practice of Hinduism
A Diversity of Belief and Practice
Thursday 9:50 – 10:20 a.m.
Whitley Auditorium
Speaker: Anand Mahadevan
Music: Professor Whittaker’s Saxophone Quartet
Join us this Thursday in Whitley Auditorium for College Chapel. This semester we will be learning about the religious and nonreligious diversity that is part of our Elon community. We will hear from religious leaders, faculty and students about the different beliefs that shape our university and how students practice and participate in their respective faith traditions.
About College Chapel
Thursday Chapel is a time and space to take a break from the busyness of the week and refresh the spirit. It is not a “worship service,” rather a time of reflection offered by a member of the Elon community or guest speaker. Music is provided each week by students and faculty from the Music department. Refreshments will be served following Chapel. All are welcome!
About our speaker
Anand Mahadevan was born in Kerala, a state on the southwest coast of India. He completed his education in India, did a 4 year degree in computers and found a job in software development. He moved to the US (Minneapolis) in 1997 with his wife Sumitha. His first daughter Megha, whose picture was in the papers recently thanks to placing third in the Spelling Bee, was born a Minnesota winter baby in 2000. Mahadevan and family moved to Burlington in 2002 when he got a full time position at LabCorp working in their IT department. His son, Dhruva, was born on the day of the 2004 tsunami.
Mahadevan was born and raised Hindu, specifically in the ways of the Tamil Brahmin. His wife is from the same background – their union being an arranged marriage. They continue to practice various aspects of it such as vegetarianism, observances of various festivals and holy days, daily lighting of the lamp at home, and chanting of prayers before the lamp. They have a choice of two temples to visit, one in McCleansville and one in Cary/Morrisville that they try to visit at least monthly.
