Writer and filmmaker Molly Secours will provide a critical perspective of racism and privilege as it affects all aspects of life in the keynote speech Saturday in Whitley Auditorium during the 2nd annual Diversity Leadership Conference.
The talk begins at 3 p.m. Secours takes the place of Tim Wise, an award-winning author on race relations forced to cancel his appearance due to illness.
From Secours’ official biography: “As a writer, filmmaker, talk-show host and cancer survivor, Molly Secours cuts to the core of social injustices. Without mincing words Secours tackles issues with clarity, humor and compassion.
“With compassion and humor, Secours explores how those classified as white shy away from honest racial discussions and how whites can (and should) accept responsibility for contributing to continued racial inequities without becoming defensive, resentful and feeling blamed. By honestly examining thoughts, behaviors and history regarding race, Secours excavates the origins of white biases and deepens their understanding so that they can more consciously change their actions and strengthen their commitment to social justice.
“Since 1995, Ms. Secours’ writings have been published in numerous newspapers, magazines and internet publications. She has appeared on local and national radio and television talk shows to discuss issues of racism, juvenile justice, white privilege, reparations for slavery and health care as a social justice issue.”
