A farmer’s market hosted by the Elon Community Church on Williamson Avenue returns on April 21 as part of the Earth Week celebrations organized by Elon University students and the Office of Sustainability.
The mission of market is to encourage the community to gather around local fresh food, to support community farmers, bakers, crafters, and the local economy and to become better stewards of the earth.
Aside from organic and produce items, the market also includes a variety of protein options including beef, chicken, pork, and goat. Locally produced cheese, eggs, baked goods, and honey products are available as well. The market offers handmade birdhouses and other crafted items.
Students representing Elon’s sustainability program and other organizations are set to share resources about stewardship of the Earth. There will be a lavender farmer and a local sheep farmer as guest vendors for the occasion. Market vendors will educate customers how to use seasonal fruits and vegetables as well as offer gardening advice. The market aims to create greater awareness for the health and economic benefits of buying local.
The market continues through the fall. It operates each Thursday from 3–6:30 p.m. at the corner of Williamson and Haggard Avenue in Elon.
