Charlotte Observer columnist Jack Betts writes that Exum is one of five former chief justices of the North Carolina Supreme Court participating in efforts to design a system “to keep judges from having to grovel for campaign money, make it clear the judiciary is independent of any special interest ties, assure the public of the integrity of the court system and the quality of judges, yet still retain direct voter involvement in who becomes a judge and whether that judge remains on the bench.”
