Evan A. Gatti, an assistant professor in the Department of Art and Art History, presented "The Bishop's Two Bodies and the Image In-Between" at the Midwest Art History Society's annual conference in Grand Rapids, Michigan on April 15.
Using an 11th Century illuminated church handbook as a case study, Gatti argued that visual images of the bishop are best understood when read like liturgical rites, which are uttered (sometimes silently) in an attempt to right the mind of the celebrant and focus the attention of the congregation.
The paper will be submitted as part of a lager interdisciplinary anthology, for which Gatti is one of the co-editors, titled Envisioning the Medieval Bishop.
