In recent months, Elon Law professor Henry Gabriel presented on the history and future of the Uniform Commercial Code at a symposium of the South Texas College of Law, delivered a lecture on the UNIDROIT Model Leasing Law in Beijing, China before the Chinese Banking Association at the request of the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, and completed service as Chairman of the Editorial Committee of the 2010 Edition of the UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts.
At the South Texas College of Law symposium, Gabriel presented his article, “The 2003 Amendments of Article Two of the Uniform Commercial Code: Eight years or a Lifetime After Completion.” It will be published in the South Texas Law Review.
The impetus behind the Chinese Ministry of Commerce request for Gabriel to speak before the Chinese Banking Association is that the Chinese government is looking into the possibility of using the UNIDROIT Model Leasing Law as a basis for China’s new leasing law. Gabriel served as a member of the United States Delegation that drafted the law. He also served as a member of the drafting committee that wrote the official commentary to the Model Law.
With the final approval in May by the UNIDROIT Governing Council, Gabriel completed his service as the Chairman of the Editorial Committee of 2010 Edition of the UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts. In addition to chairing the editorial committee, which had the task of harmonizing style and language throughout the Principles, Gabriel also served as a member of the drafting committee that drafted the Principles. Gabriel continues to be the American representative to the UNIDROIT Governing Council.
