Travis Mitchell and Lauren Harbury, two Elon University communications students, received top prizes at the Journalism That Matters "Create or Die 2" gathering held at the University of North Carolina Greensboro on June 2-5. The design | build | pitch event focused on creating innovations in new media to serve diverse audiences.
New Elon alumni to join Teach for America

Nineteen Elon University alumni from the Class of 2011 will return to the classroom this fall as part of Teach for America, a national nonprofit that recruits and trains new college graduates to help erase educational inequities found in many urban and rural low-income communities. It is the largest number of Elon alumni ever selected into the program for the same academic year.

Katherine Gilliam-Ruffin Pinson '81 received the Virginia Military Institute Distinguished Service Award, the highest recognition given to a civilian working at the Lexington, Va., school.
Kearns Selected for Regional-Director

Lauren Kearns, Associate Professor of Dance and Head of the Dance Program, was recently selected as the Regional-Director for the American College Dance Festival Association's Mid-Atlantic Region. Kearns attended the national board meeting in Walnut Creek, CA where she completed her first term as a board member. She'll begin her Regional-Director duties October 1, 2011.
