Sarah Schermerhorn ’11 to play pro volleyball in Europe

Former Elon volleyball standout Sarah Schermerhorn '11 became the first player in program history to sign a professional contract. She will play for the Brøndby Volleyball Club in Copenhagen, Denmark, next season, according to ElonPhoenix.com.

“I am so excited to get this opportunity to play overseas and continue my volleyball career,” Schermerhorn told ElonPhoenix.com. “I really enjoyed my four years at Elon and couldn’t have asked for better teammates and coaches to prepare me for this experience.”

As a senior last season, Schermerhorn started all 35 of the Phoenix’s matches and ranked in the top two in kills, kills per set, serve aces and blocks, earning her the 2010 team MVP award. In her four years at Elon, she recorded 1,023 kills, 119 service aces and 381 blocks. Schermerhorn finished her career fourth on Elon’s Division I individual career records list for total blocks and fifth on the Division I individual season records list for service aces.

The CoSIDA/ESPN Academic All-District 3 First Team selection and three-time Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll honoree graduated from Elon in May with a Bachelor of Arts in economics.

“Sarah is going to make a great professional volleyball player,” said Elon head coach Mary Tendler. “She is a very competitive, self-driven and talented athlete. She was very instrumental in our push to win the North Division championship. I have a feeling she will have the same impact with the Brøndby Volleyball Club. Sarah got a late start playing volleyball, but has improved tremendously each season. I do believe her best volleyball is yet to come. I’ll be rooting for Sarah and the Brøndby Volleyball Club.”
