Several Elon University events commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks that changed the nation forever.

September 6-13
“Expression Board” at College Coffee and posted in Moseley Center
An “Expression Board” will be available at the Sept. 6 College Coffee for community members to write brief thoughts and reflections on the 10th anniversary of attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 and the years following. The board will also be in Moseley Center, placed along the wall across from Pan Geos, through Sept. 13.
Thursday, September 8
A 9/11 Discussion
Whitley Auditorium, 7:30 p.m.
It has become a cliché to say that the events of September 11, 2001, changed the world, yet the full impact of those events on individuals and societies alike has not been fully explored. A panel of experts from a variety of fields−economics, psychology, sociology−will describe how the terrorist acts of that unforgettable day transformed lives and political institutions alike.
Panelists are: Walt Enders (Culverhouse College of the University of Alabama); Kraig Byerlein (Notre Dame); Daniel Masters (UNC Wilmington); Elon University’s Laura Roselle will moderate the panel.

Flag Lowering Ceremony
Scott Plaza (in front of Alamance near the flag pole), 8:46 a.m.
At 8:46 a.m., brief remarks will be shared by President Leo M. Lambert & Associate Chaplain Phil Smith. A wreath will be placed in front of the flags at Scott Plaza, the U.S. flag will be lowered and the Alamance bell tower will ring 115 times, representing the nations which lost citizens in the 9/11 attacks. The event coincides with the moment the first plane hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

Interfaith Cooperation in the Post-9/11 World: A Student Dialogue
McKinnon Hall (Moseley Center), 4:30 p.m.
The student-moderated discussion is open to anyone on campus with an interest in interfaith cooperation and bettering the next decade after 9/11. There will be light snacks and drinks provided.

A Service of Remembrance and Reflection

President Leo M. Lambert and Associate Chaplain Phil Smith will lead members of the Elon University community in reflecting on the events of Sept. 11, 2001 as experienced on campus, how we have moved forward over the past 10 years, and Elon’s role in creating a culture of greater understanding and a future of peace.
