Elon’s revised campus smoking policy

Read this note for details of revisions and clarifications to Elon's smoking policy.

*****

Elon’s campus policy was changed following community feedback, forums and discussion groups in 2010-11.

POLICY:
Elon University is a smoke-free campus with respect to all facilities, except outdoor facilities. Smoking is not permitted within 30 feet of university buildings or in Rhodes Stadium.

DEFINITIONS:
For purposes of this policy, smoking is defined as the act of lighting, smoking or carrying a lighted or smoldering cigar, cigarette or pipe of any kind.

SCOPE:
This policy applies to:

  • Students
  • Faculty and staff
  • Person using vehicles owned or leased by the university
  • Campus visitors including contractors, consultants, and temporary employees. Contractors are expected to designate smoking areas on their work sites, to be approved by the university; and
  • Employees of companies contracted to work at the university such as dining services, the bookstore, etc.

It is expected that individuals who smoke will show concern for the neatness of the area and put smoking-related waste in proper receptacles provided for that purpose. Personal safety measures should be followed at all times. The success of this policy depends upon the consideration, and cooperation of both smokers and non-smokers. All members of the Elon University community share in the responsibility of adhering to and enforcing this policy.

Several initiatives will occur this fall and into the spring term:

  • The Office of Substance Education and SPARKS Peer Educators will embark on an awareness campaign this fall to raise awareness of the smoking policy.
  • Phased relocation of smoking receptacles to meet the standards of the policy will occur this fall. The Office of Substance Education is working with the Physical Plant staff to determine the best places for location of receptacles.
  • The Elon Staff Wellness Center is offering Quit Smart Smoking cessation classes for faculty and staff. For more information or to register call the Elon Wellness Center at 278-5569.
  • Students interested in quitting smoking may participate in free smoking cessation classes offered by the Alamance Regional Medical Center. FreshStart is a smoking cessation program developed by the American Cancer Society and sponsored by Alamance Regional Medical Center and Glen Raven Pharmacy. The class consists of four one-hour sessions held during a two-week period every third month. All of the methods and activities contain the most effective elements for success. These four one-hour sessions are held in Alamance Regional’s Grand Oaks Center from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

To register for these free classes, please call (336) 538-8012 or (336) 538-8093 or register online at https://www.armc.com/events-and-classes/default.asp?did=17&eid=763. In the Class/Topic box enter “FreshStart.”

Thank you in advance for your cooperation. Look for more information and awareness campaigns on campus throughout this year. Please direct any questions to Jordan Perry in the Office of Substance Education at (336) 278-7285.
